Used Books and the Environment
A recent American study by stated that the US new book industry emits over 12.4million tons of CO2 every year (including forest carbon loss). However, used books do not have the same environmental impacts in terms of CO2 emissions and resource depletion.
Bookdonors environmental policy is to reuse as many books as possible and then recycle the remainder. Its policy of not send anything to landfill ensures that even its packaging material get reused many times before finally going for recycling.
In early 2011 a study by Zero Waste Scotland estimated
that Bookdonors delivered in a net figure 0.86 (tCO2e) per tonne of
books reuse and 0.71(tCO2e) per tonne of books recycled per tonne of
books processed. Since April 2008 when Bookdonors started to keep
records for books received, it has diverted 1582 tonnes of books from
landfill up to March 2011 resulting in a saving of 1,249tonne of CO2e
